Compared to 30 years of painting landscapes, still life is a newer practice for me. However, like landscape, still life is for me a study of light and its phenomena. Every object lives with its own changing atmosphere and light; everything also lives and affects everything else; and each object colors all that is next to it.
I have a huge admiration for Rembrandt; following what he believed and practiced I challenge myself and constantly experiment rather than painting what I already know how to paint, the way I already know how to paint it, for the sake of having a consistent style. Hopefully through this process I will arrive at the subjects that I like most to paint, and develop a new representational language. For now I continue making my brushstrokes gently next to one another with colors fresh and sizzling with light.
